Activities

Wedelns love the outdoors. Winter, spring, summer, and fall — all year we take advantage of everything the Mount Washington Valley has to offer.

Winter

Skiing & Snowboarding

When the snow starts to fall, tear up the slopes for some of the best skiing and snowboarding in New England! Wedeln is close to six alpine ski areas that have something for every level of skier or snowboarder. Hit the slopes at Wildcat, Attitash, Black Mountain, Bretton Woods, Cranmore Mountain, or King Pine Resort—and if you still crave more variety, a short drive into Maine will take you to Shawnee Peak or Sunday River.

Ice Climbing & Winter Hiking

To many of the club's more avid outdoor enthusiasts, the season isn't over until they've hiked and skied the steepest stuff in New England! Famous for its spectacular scenery, deep snow, and challenging terrain, Tuckerman's Ravine offers a true taste of backcountry skiing—but isn't for the faint of heart! At the end of each ski season, many hike to watch teams compete in Tuckerman's Inferno, a pentathalon with legs including running, kayaking, biking, hiking, and skiing or snowboarding.

Cross-Country Skiing
& Snowshoeing

Come enjoy cross-country skiing or snowshoeing through the quiet wintry woods! Local cross-country ski areas have terrain for every ability, from trails along the Saco River to the more challenging Wildcat Valley Trail. Area networks range from shorter trails across snow-covered golf courses to longer world-class trails.

Annual Ski Trips

Each year Wedeln organizes and sponsors a destination ski trip to a top-notch ski resort. Trips, which are reasonably priced, have included Bad Gastein Valley and Salzburg Austria; Cortina and Venice, Italy; Maribel and Paris, France; Whistler/Blackcomb and Vancouver, British Columbia. These trips are a great way to meet new people or to get to know fellow club members while making memories you will cherish for a lifetime! The 2012 ski trip is to Telluride in Colorado.

Summer

Hiking & Climbing

A wide variety of trails and terrain makes the area perfect for hiking and climbing enthusiasts of all levels. Trails nearby include Moat Mountain Range, Mt. Kearsarge, and Black Cap for short social hikes or more intense excursions for wilderness exploration. In addition, Wedeln hosts hikes throughout the year, which is a fun way to spend time with friends and meet new people while getting out for some great exercise!

Canoeing & Kayaking

Some of the best whitewater in New England is in the White Mountains—and Wedeln has several members who are avid whitewater paddlers, some of whom are also instructors for the Appalachian Mountain Club! If you're a leisurely paddler, the section of the Saco River at the West Side Road Bridge to the Route 16 Bridge is perfect for viewing fantastic wildlife while enjoying slower moving water. A popular event that shouldn't be missed is the annual Wedeln Saco River Canoe Trip, a great way to meet new people or catch up with old friends. And each year the adventure concludes with a barbecue, bonfire, and sometimes even a singalong!

Road & Mountain Biking

Fans of biking will find the area rich with trails for a leisurely ride with friends or a more adventurous trip to one of the local ski areas for some lift-served biking. The region is considered some of the most physically challenging terrain, with many of the roads crossing mountain passes, which often includes some steady climbing followed by several miles of descent. There are plenty of back country roads, forest trails, and logging roads to explore.

Golf

The valley is home to 90 holes of golf at various courses in the area—but the spectacular mountain views may make it hard to keep your eye on the ball! A must for every golfer and a highlight of the Club's summer events schedule is the Wedeln Open Golf Tournament. The weekend-long event supports the Bragan Memorial Scholarship, with a portion of the proceeds presented to a student ski athlete from the area to advance that student's ski career. The scholarship is dedicated in the memory of Peter Bragan, one of the most selfless lifetime members of the Club. Get more information at www.braganscholarship.com.
